Cannons’ Matt Campbell added to PUP list after sustaining injury at Team USA tryouts
The Boston Cannons moved fourth-year midfielder Matt Campbell to the Physically Unable to Perform list on Tuesday.
The 26-year-old sustained an injury during Team USA tryouts in Charlotte last week. Details surrounding the injury are unknown.
Campbell is expected to miss at least the next two weekends of games. No timeline has been set for his return. Cannons head coach and general manager Brian Holman is focused on prioritizing Campbell's recovery before he returns to action.
“He’ll be back in the lineup when he’s 100% healthy and ready to play,” Holman said.
Campbell’s absence leaves the Cannons without one of their top midfield threats heading into their matchup against the New York Atlas this Friday. The reigning Gait Brothers Midfielder of the Year has recorded seven points through the team’s first four games of the season.
With Campbell sidelined, midfielders Graydon Hogg and Tye Kurtz could see increased opportunities after being on and off the active roster throughout the season.
Earlier this year, Holman expressed confidence in a young midfield unit despite its lack of veteran experience.
“We’re not veteran out of the midfield … but we’ve got really good players,” Holman said during Opening Weekend.
That group includes rookies like Mikey Weisshaar and Logan Ip, whom Campbell has helped mentor through their transition to the professional level. Beyond his production on the field, Campbell’s absence leaves the Cannons without one of their most experienced midfielders.
